Is RSS a Political Organisation? Understanding Its Position on Politics

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh has consistently stated that it is not a political organisation. From its beginning, RSS has maintained that its objectives of character building and organising society cannot be achieved through political power.

The founder of RSS, Dr. K.B. Hedgewar, had been active in political movements earlier in his life. However, before establishing RSS, he withdrew completely from political activity. This decision was based on the belief that lasting national strength depends on society, not on control of political authority.

RSS focuses on creating individuals with patriotism, discipline, and social responsibility. Its work is directed toward building an alert and organised society that can guide national life through moral strength rather than political control.

RSS and the Use of Political Power

According to RSS, political power is only one part of national life and cannot by itself transform society. The Sangh believes that even the best political system will fail if society lacks character, unity, and discipline.

Instead of directly participating in politics, RSS seeks to influence public life by preparing responsible citizens. These individuals, through their conduct and awareness, can keep a watch on political institutions and help ensure ethical and accountable governance.

RSS holds that an organised and conscious society naturally acts as a corrective force. Such a society does not depend on political authority for its moral direction but expects political systems to function in alignment with national interest.

Relationship Between RSS and Political Parties

RSS volunteers work in many fields of national life, including social service, education, labour, culture, and politics. These activities are carried out through various independent organisations. Each organisation functions autonomously with its own leadership, programmes, and financial arrangements.

RSS does not control these organisations, nor does it function as a political party. Participation in any political organisation is a personal choice of individuals and not a requirement of association with RSS.

The Sangh acknowledges that its volunteers may naturally support political ideas or parties that align with its vision of national development. However, RSS itself works for society as a whole and not for any political party.

Politics as a Part of Social Life

RSS views politics as a component of social life, not its centre. The organisation believes that when society is strong, disciplined, and united, political systems automatically improve.

For this reason, RSS continues to focus on long term social work rather than electoral processes. Its emphasis remains on building character, fostering unity, and creating a sense of national responsibility among citizens.

This position explains why RSS maintains distance from direct political engagement while remaining deeply concerned about the moral and social health of the nation.
